A display and illustrated talk to showcase the Schools Folklore Collection from 1937-1938 and material from schools around CountyKildare.
In 1937, the Folklore Commission asked primary school teachers around the country to encourage their pupils to collect local history, weather lore, cures, riddles, proverbs, etc from older people and write it down. Not every school participated as it was a voluntary scheme.
The original copy books completed by the children are stored in the Folklore Department, UCD while a microfilm version of some material is held in Local Studies, Newbridge. There will be a display of photographs and material from the copy books. The talk will last about 30 minutes with plenty of time for questions and discussion.  Lists of schools involved from County Kildare will be displayed and it would be wonderful if original pupils and/or their families were able to attend.

Talk on the Mountmellick Canal
Laois Heritage Society are organising a talk on the MountmellickCanal in the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise, on Thursday, 24 April at 8.30pm.  It will be given a popular Mountmellick man, Bill Lawlor, whose father was agent (manager) of the Grand Canal’s branch in Mountmellick. Bill was born in the agent’s house where he still lives today. He, therefore, has many special memories of life on the canal when he was growing up.  The talk is part of the Spring programme of talks organised by Laois Heritage Society. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Bill’s story features in the book on MountmellickCanal published by Laois County Council with the support of the Heritage Council. It is available to purchase at €5 plus postage, directly from me, online via Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Mountmellick-Canal-Mary-Williams/dp/1899642080/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_t) or to download for free from http://www.laois.ie/Heritage/
