Greetings,
Is your society planning an outing soon and looking for somewhere new and interesting to visit? Then, I would like to invite you to come and see us at The Francis Ledwidge Museum & War Memorial centre, birthplace of WWI poet Francis Ledwidge. The 19th century farm labourer’s cottage museum is set in the heart of the historic BoyneValley just one mile east of the Georgian village of Slane, Co. Meath. It houses the poet’s works and artefacts from World War I, alongside memorabilia of the period. In the beautiful and tranquil garden to the rear is a replica of an original monument commissioned and erected by the city of Ieper (Ypres) at the exact spot where the poet was killed
A guide will take you on the amazing journey of this man’s life, from his birth in the cottage, his early life, enlistment in the British Army and his experiences as a soldier in various theatres of war, and finally his untimely death at the third battle of Ypres, Belgium in July 1917. His first volume of fifty poems, ‘Songs of the Fields’ was published whilst he was still a serving soldier in 1915 and other volumes were published after his death. Today there are over two hundred poems in print.
There is an abundance of historical sites in the area, all just approximately fifteen minutes drive away from us, to name a few; The Hill of Slane, Slane Castle, The Battle of the Boyne Centre, Monasterboice etc. We here at the museum will gladly assist and advise you on an itinerary for your visit. We also have an arrangement with the hotel and restaurants in Slane whereby tours to the museum can avail of a discount on meals. The vouchers will be given to the tour leader when you visit the museum.
We are open every day from 10am to 5pm. Last visit 4.30pm. Please telephone or email in advance to make a booking
We look forward to welcoming you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Rosemary Yore
