The Friends of Medieval Dublin and Dublin City Council are pleased to announce the second of our seven MILESTONES OF MEDIEVAL DUBLIN talks next TUESDAY in the Wood Quay Venue at 1.05pm.
This talk will be presented by Andy Woods. Andy recently completed his PhD at Cambridge University and is now Curator of Numismatics with Yorkshire Museums Trust. The title of his talk is “Producing Dublin’s first coinage: the money of the Hiberno-Scandinavians”
The first coinage struck in Ireland was produced in Dublin in c.995 under the authority of Sitric Silkenbeard, the Hiberno-Scandinavian ruler of the town. This lecture will consider the coinage – how, when and why it was produced – in order to argue that its manufacture represents an important point in the economic and political history of the town.
Each of the five subsequent lectures will run on a Tuesday mid-month from August to December in the Wood Quay Venue of Dublin City Council at 1.05pm, against the unique backdrop of a stretch of the original Hiberno-Norse wall dating from the 12th century.
